Rock painting, boats and barra.

Thursday 30/9/2010
On Monday we went to have a look at the rock paintings at Ubirr. We saw paintings of barramundi, people, Rainbow Serpent - who swallowed a boy who wouldn't stop crying -wallabies, kangaroos, emus, turtles, a person with swollen joints - he'd disturbed a sacred place - a lightening man, pictures of European people - they had their hands in their pockets and some had pipes - hunting, a picture which the traditional owners of the land believed were drawn by the Mimi Spirits. That one was up really high on top of an overhang of rock. Then we climbed up to the top of a really high cliff. I could see for a very long way. There was wetlands and more rocky areas. It was really hot! We sat underneath two rocks leaning together and decided it would have made a good shelter. We also saw places were the painters had ground up rocks to make paint and had made a dip like a bowl in the rocks.
When we left, all the kids fell asleep in the car and when we woke up, we were back at Yellow Waters. Mum was taking us on a boat trip!! We saw crocodiles and we saw white bellied sea eagles, azure kingfishers, Jabirus, a Jabiru nest, which was about 100 times bigger than any other nest I've seen in my life! There were lots of ducks and other birds. It was fun and exciting! Mum spent the whole time telling us to sit down on our bottoms and if we fell in, she was not going to jump in and save us and we would be eaten by crocodiles! Daddy was trying to catch a barramundi while we were on the boat, but he didn't get any.
When we got back Mum got us barramundi for dinner again! It was a great day!

Tuesday we drove to Mataranka and while Daddy rebuilt the winch system on the camper - after picking up supplies from Katherine - we went to the restaurant and had steak for dinner! There were two long-necked turtles in a tank called Tiny and Biggy. That night there was HUGE storm! It was really noisy and there was lots of thunder and lightening and there was so much wind the whole camper shook! I didn't like it a single bit! Daddy came and lay down with me until the storm stopped.
Mum woke me up Wednesday morning and said "Do you want to see a peahen?" I jumped out of bed and Mum gave me a piggy back outside. There were three peahens walking around. One of them had flown out of a tree and given her a big fright and got a big fright herself! There were lots of big and little branches down from the storm and Erin, Claire and I started to pick them up and make a huge pile. We went up to watch the barra feeding and I got to feed one with a rod and so did Erin! The man could pick them right out of the water! They were really big! We saw a peacock showing off to the peahens. He shook his beautiful tail feathers at them. He was very pretty, but they ignored him. There was a baby wallaby that the owners had rescued and we patted her and I fed her some carrot! She was really cute. Molly really liked her too and kept trying to grab her!
Today we drove to Alice Springs and tomorrow we are just driving again.

Cables and snakes and Kakadu

Sunday 26/9/2010
Yesterday we left Darwin and drove to Kakadu National Park. The caravan park in Jabiru was our first stop, after buying park passes. We went to check out the pool while Daddy did some work on the camper. It looked like a beach because there was pebbly slope which looked like sand going down into the water. It looked like the water was washing up on the sand. All around the edge was really shallow and Molly could sit with Mum in the water! It was really big and had lots of shade sails and palm trees and rocks all around with a giant waterfall at one side. The when we went to check on Daddy he had worked out that a cable (that makes the camper go up and down) had snapped! It was a very big disaster! We drove to a service station to see if they had cable, but they didn't. We were driving around and we saw a man coming out of a tour place, so we stopped and Mum asked him if he knew where we could get some cable. He said to follow him because next door to his place was a yard where old cars were dumped. We followed him and Dad jumped out of the car and climbed through a gap in the fence. He looked in the cars to see if they had any cable to use and then he found an antenna tower (actually Mum found it, but let's not argue - ed) which was covered in cables. Most of them were rusty, but he pulled off some to see if they could work. Then the tour guide pointed us to the local dump to see if we could find some cable there. He was very nice and helpful. So we went to the dump, but couldn't find any cable. Then Mum spotted another antenna tower and Daddy collected some more. When we got back to the camper, Daddy spent hours working on it and finally (!) it went up! So we went to bed.
This morning Mum was sitting on the ground under a tree and spotted something wriggling. She called us "look a baby snake!" She pointed it out to us and took photos. Then she called reception to see if they wanted to do something about it, or just leave it. They sent up a man who said it looked like a brown snake. We gave him our shovel and he shooed it away into a bush. After a while it got a bit cranky. Another man came and looked at it and said it was a tree snake, which aren't too dangerous. It had very good camouflage in it's surroundings and it looked like a stick! I couldn't see it until Mum took a picture and showed me. We have also seen fruit bats, lots of geckos (and their babies!) frogs and lots of different bugs!
Then we left to explore Kakadu. First we went to the Aboriginal Culture Centre. We saw lots of things including nets for catching fish, spear tips, rocks used for mashing, rocks used for cutting and lots of pictures and displays. There was also a movie of a woman weaving a grass bowl. After there we went to Yellow Waters and had some lunch. I saw lots of barramundi, other big and little fish, lots of birds - some with long legs and beaks for fishing - water lilies, paper-bark trees and lots of big green plants.
We spent the afternoon in the pool, keeping cool.
I miss my friends and family.

Later that day...

Friday 24/9/2010
At Crocodylus Park we went to the museum and we saw some baby crocodiles in tanks and some skeletons and skulls of crocodiles. We saw eggs and how the crocs make nests and how the different crocs make different nests. There were models of traps used to catch crocodiles and models of different ways they track crocodiles. There was a timeline which showed crocodiles had been around since dinosaurs were on earth and we were told that there had been crocs that could only live on land and they had become extinct, but the ones that could survive in water and on land, survived. Then we went outside and looked at the snakes. There were two boa constrictors which were cool! We went on a tour of the breeding crocodiles. There was a lagoon and the guide tried to feed the female crocs a turkey leg, but they wouldn't jump. There were two pulleys and wire running between them. On the bottom one there was a chain to attach food and the guide dangled it above the water. One croc teased us, by sticking it's nose up, but then it went back in. Then we saw the big male crocs and they were very, very big. He fed them by holding a stick over the fence with a string on the end for some meat. You couldn't see the croc in the water or moving until it jumped! It scared the life out of me! Then he offered for other people to feed the crocs and Mummy had a go. He was a bit lazy and he wouldn't go for it until she dipped it in the water like a tea bag. When the crocs jumped, they made me jump but they were very, very cool. After feeding the big crocs we got to hold a baby! It was weird. It made me feel a bit ugh! It was very cute though. It felt squashy and the sides felt like a snake and the top was really bumpy. It had big, round eyes and it kept watching Molly's toes dangling out of the sling, like they might be something yummy to nibble on! Crocodiles have a valve in the back of their throat which closes when they are underwater so when the eat they have to open the valve to swallow, so they have to come to the surface. The valve makes a "POP" sound! They can stay underwater for at least an hour if they're not stressed. Crocodiles are different from alligators. Alligators have a bigger snout and crocodiles have a longer snout. It was good fun but very hot!
When we got back, we went for a swim. While we were swimming Mum spoke to the chef and then told us that they could cook us "barra and beans" for dinner!! I haven't ever eaten at a restaurant because they don't usually have food we can eat, but Mum made sure they didn't use anything that could make us sick. It was REALLY nice and I wished I could have more, but Mum and Dad said "no", because you had to pay for "seconds." It was cool to eat by the pool. Claire calls barramundi "barran-undies!"
Now I'm going to bed before I get eaten by mozzies! Tomorrow we leave for Kakadu (Takadoos according to Claire!)

swimming and exploring days

Friday 24/9/2010

tues - left for Rum Jungle near Litchfield National Park.
wed - Litchfield N.P. where we saw magnetic termite mounds. We have been seeing lots of termite mounds, but these ones were flat. They build them so they can go to different parts of the mound, depending on the time of day and how hot it is. Then we went for a bit of a drive down a four wheel drive track and drove through a water crossing where there were crocodiles, but we didn't see any. The track was too corrugated and Daddy was worried the car was going to shake apart, so we turned around after a while and went back through the water. We still didn't see a crocodile. From there we went to Wangi Falls, where we had a picnic lunch, then walked down to the waterfalls. There were millions and trillions of people swimming in the pool under the falls, but we didn't bring our swimmers, because we were told there were crocodiles in all the water in Litchfield N.P. (this one is checked at the start of the dry to see if any got in during the wet season and then it's safe to swim for the whole dry season. Wish they'd told us that earlier - ed) We walked up to the tree-top lookout. It was at the top of the very tall palm trees. It took a long time to get up there. There were lots of bats in the trees. They were waving their wings like a fan, to keep cool. It was steep and very hard work and it was very hot, but it was worth it in the end because it was a lot of fun. When we came down, we went and dipped our feet in the water at the falls. The water was nice. When we got back to the caravan park we decided to pack up and go to Darwin. The night before there were lots of cane toads and they were very gross, so we hopped there wasn't any in Darwin.
Mummy and Daddy started to pack up the camper, but it wouldn't go down. Daddy finally got it to go down and we drove to Darwin. When we got there Daddy tried to wind up the camper and half way up it went TWANG, CRUNCH, THUD! and came back down! Something broke! Daddy spent three hours fixing it while we played and lay on cushions outside. Mum was worried that it would fall down again and I was a little bit worried too. We went to bed and it didn't fall down. Yet!
thurs - We went into the city of Darwin so Mum and Daddy could buy a coffee. We walked around the city until it was time to come back for a swim. On our way to the pool, we passed the giant jumping pillow, so we had a go. It was good fun because you could bounce really high and it was fun to run on and Claire kept falling over. We went to the big pool, not the one near our camper and it was shallow enough at one end that even Claire could stand up. There was a waterfall that we stood underneath. Mum went to the sunset markets with Molly and we went for another swim in the closer pool, but nobody but Dad could stand up in it.
fri - this morning we went to meet two friends of Mum's. They both have little girls born the same time as Claire. It wasn't so exactly exciting for me and Claire wouldn't speak, but Mum had a good time and I took a photo of her with her friends. We're back at the camper now, but we are going to Crocodylus Park soon! I want to see lots of crocodiles!

5 things

Monday 20/9/2010
Katherine
5 things I saw today that were interesting:
Kingfisher - was catching it's breakfast. It caught a frog while we were watching it out our camper window.
Wallabies - having morning tea at the National Park. Some of them had babies in their pouches. We got very close to them. They were really cute especially the really little ones.
Nitilmuk (Katherine Gorge) Visitor Information Centre - there was a display of turtle eggs. They looked real. There was also a model of Katherine Gorge in the floor that you could walk over. You could see all the different gorges. There are six in all. There was Aboriginal paintings and a weaving display.
Paperbark nest - hanging in the branches of a tree. It was made of paperbark and leaves and twigs. We found a nearby paperbark tree that the bird may have used.
A bird of prey - looking for something to eat. It was swooping around in circles very high up in the sky. They have very good eyesight and can see small animals on the ground. When they see something they swoop down and grab it.

New Friends

Sunday 19/9/2010

I forgot to write about going to see the Devil's Marbles on Friday. They were big stacks of huge boulders. Some were spheres and some were ovals. Some were split in half. Some looked like they had been sliced with a giant's knife. We saw one sphere that was on a slope, but not rolling anywhere! They were formed somehow. (Mum says : "oh dear.")

Yesterday we drove from Daly Waters to Mataranka. We went to a really old cemetery that was built a hundred million years ago or something. People who died a long time ago were buried there. A lot of them were characters from "We of the Never Never" a famous Australian book. We checked one camping site, but we didn't like it, so went to another one, which was on a farm. One we'd set up the camper, we got our swimmers on and walked to Bitter Springs, which is a waterhole with really warm water. We went for a swim, but it was too deep for Mum and Dad to stand up and there were no edges, so it was pretty hard. We took turns swimming to Mum or Dad. There was lots of slippery stuff (algae-ed) on the stairs so it was tricky. We spent most of the time holding on to the stairs and kicking about in the warm water. It was really nice.
When we went back to the camper for dinner there was a family camped next to us and we made friends with the two boys. We played chasings and the eldest boy slipped in the mud and was covered from head to toe!
During the night Claire had a big accident and fell out of the camper! She is ok and has forgotten what happened luckily!
This morning we played with our new friends for a little while and then started to drive to Katherine. We checked out the Tourist Information Centre for brochures on places to stay and things to see. We went to the supermarket to buy supplies. After lunch we came to the campsite. It is nice. There are lots of leaves and sticks and we've been making pictures with leaves, twigs and seed pods. There are lots of trees and the shade is really nice. We chased skinks on the tree trunks. We went for a swim in the pool. Luckily there were no crocodiles! We could stand up in the shallow end. I kept diving under and tickling toes. The water was a little bit cold but it was still nice. We have been playing outside since we got back from the pool and we are having chops, chips and vegies for dinner. Yum! One of my favourites!
Blogging is sorta hard. Mum makes me do it. I don't know why.
Mum says : I want Hannah to write a blog of things she sees and wants to remember, because if it's in her words and things she found interesting she will find it easier to remember when she is old like me. We are both finding it a painful process!

Aliens and sunshine

thursday 16/9/2010

We woke up and got out of bed to have breakfast. It was cold and rainy. We went for a walk to the shop and then came back and Erin, Claire and I had a quick play on the playground across from our camper while Mum and Dad packed up. They called us over to help and we learnt how to pack up the cords and hoses. We hooked the camper up and went to have a look around Alice Springs. We drove up Anzac Hill to look at the view of Alice Springs. We just took a quick photo and left because it was raining. We went and looked at some of the shops in town and a shopkeeper gave us each a bracelet with the aboriginal flag on it and then went to McDonald's to buy chips for lunch. We couldn't find a parking spot so we parked a long way away. Daddy went to buy our lunch but he got lost. When he got back he was soaking wet.

We started to drive and I fell asleep. Mum and Daddy said we passed the Tropic of Capricorn (Daddy tried to explain what that is, but I didn't understand a word of it.) We stopped a few times to feed Molly and go to the toilet and then got to Wycliffe Well which is the U.F.O. capital of Australia. U.F.O. stands for Unidentified Flying Object which could be a weather balloon, a meteorite, a plane, a flying saucer or a person with a jet-pack. There is a U.F.O Centre that we will see in the morning, but right now I am getting very silly and have to go to bed before Mummy snaps. (that last line was written by Mummy by the way.)

saturday 18/9/2010

Yesterday (Friday) we woke up and went to have a look at the aliens. We had a picture with Hulk and then we went to have a look at the shop. On the way we saw a family of three aliens and their spaceship. When we went into the shop we saw wild snakes in jars. There were lots of stories on the wall about people seeing U.F.Os. There was lots of Aboriginal art as well. We went back to the camper and drove off to Daly Waters.

As we drove it got hotter and hotter and hotter. The sun came and out and there was no more rain and clouds. When we got to close to where we were stopping we saw lots of kangaroos and wallabies. They were hopping across the road. When we stopped to look at one tiny one, it hopped right up to the car to say hello. When we got here we got a camping spot and set up the camper. Then we had dinner outside and went to bed.

This morning we have been playing outside in the dirt and eating pancakes for breakfast. Soon we are driving to Mataranka after we check out Daly Waters pub.
